Great minds...

They say great minds think alike, but a wish they didnt. This video waas done by a company called the Metro Group. Their project was called the "Future Store Initiative". And its just buggered up one of my projects b4 it even got off the ground!

Polymer Vision - Electronic Paper

Started looking into this this after seeing that future of communication video.

The future of Communications..and the world

V.interesting...then gets a little scary

A little bit about Socialite

Projects on the drawing board

To date, I have two main ideas for projects. Both ideas have two main subject areas in common:

Both explore how the internet experience, which at present only exists virtually, can be adapted in the physical world. Essentially creating a physical web based experience.

Secondly, both have strong technology undertones in that I will be looking at emerging and future technologies to implement the above. I’ve always been interested in what the future has in store. In particular how technology will continue to evolve and change our lives in ever increasing diversity. So as part of what ever project I choose, I’m going to investigate in detail current and emerging technologies. This research will look at technologies out now, a year from now, 5, 10, 15, & 50 years from now and I will base my project around these discoveries / predictions. Essentially I’m going to become a futurist for a year!

Project Idea (1)

Title:

THE VIRTUAL ANNOTATION OF PEOPLE & PLACE: - a visual investigation into the future of on & offline spaces & how this ‘located media’ will be intertwined with our physical one.

About: The idea for the project derived from looking at two websites, www.dodgeball.com & www.socialite.com. Both are mobile phone / web based services that essentially provide us with data relevant in our own personal space at the time.

Dodgeball is a service that you can use to pull friends & people to where you are via your mobile. Basically it tells people where you are and tells them how to get their.

Socialite provides a service that you can use to annotate physical spaces online once again via your mobile phone. Basically you can leave a virtual message on say a street corner, then a few hours or days later, when one of your friends comes to the same street corner, their mobile will tell them that you left a message for them. Essentially it’s the virtual annotation of space.

I liked the idea of both of these as they have the potential to change a person’s interaction with their surroundings and shift their reality of what’s online and what’s offline.

Project Idea (2)

Title:

RE-BRANDING THE SHOPPING EXPERIENCE:- a visual investigation into how retailers will interact with consumers in the future.

About: Shopping has become much more than the exchange of money for goods or services. It has become a form of self expression, a bonding experience and even a form of therapy in some cases. The future will see new technologies completely change the way we shop and how retailers interact with consumers.

The web has shown how consumers prefer a lot more freedom about how and when they shop and what they want. The prefer the more personal experience of shopping online. E.g. online shops can keep track of your buying or browsing habits and suggest new products.

I liked the idea of empowering the consumer with their own shopping experience by providing them with all the information and capability at present only the web provides.

A little about my course

Title: MA Design: Multimedia & Graphics

Location: University Of Sunderland

Introduction

This is a practice based programme in creative design using digital media. Students joining this programme should already be proficient in the use of software for any of the following purposes: web design multimedia 3D modelling and animation graphics or print based design. Contextual studies in design theory will underpin the production of practical design work. Students are likely to develop their technical skills enormously during this course, but this will be through practice or tutorial support rather than formal software training. The main emphasis of the programme is on exploring an aspect of design thinking using one or more digital media as the main tool.

Students undertake a series of studio based modules of negotiated content, based upon individual research and professional goals. Self-directed learning is supported by practical and theoretical lectures, critiques and seminar presentations. At masters level students will present a dissertation or case study which supports their portfolio of creative work.

This MA operates in close collaboration with MA Illustration and Design and MA 3D Design Innovation. This can allow for the combination of two or more specialist media disciplines if desired.

Stage 1

Postgraduate Certificate
Design: Multimedia and Graphics 1 (60 credit module)
This practical and theoretical module enables students to explore aspects of electronic media design pertinent to their own academic and vocational interests, based upon a negotiated 'statement of intent' or rationale.

Stage 2

Postgraduate Diploma
Design: Multimedia and Graphics 2 (60 credit module)
Building upon the experiences at certificate stage, a second thirty credit module allows further development of electronic media skills through both practical and theoretical research. A second (thirty credit) theory module explores the techniques and effective application of visual communication as it applies to electronic media and other specialist design disciplines.

Stage 3

Masters
Design: Multimedia and Graphics 3 (60 credit module)
Within a sixty credit module, students produce a portfolio of innovative, creative work which has evolved from the visual and theoretical research fostered at stages one and two. This will be supported by a dissertation or case study either based upon the practical and research outcomes, or the historical or contemporary contexts from which the work has evolved.

Welcome

Greetings, pilgrim. I am Mark Kilgallon.

"I hope you are sitting comfortably at your pc / laptop. Congrats: you have unearthed the official Blog for my masters degree! As many of my readership can attest, I invented the internet back in 1988. Many of my predictions, alas, have since borne sorry fruit, and I, too, have spent many troubled hours distracted by erotica.

However, the opportunity to revolutionise man's communication with man demands that, finalement, this luddite throw his full weight webwards. With a vengeance. So hold fast, friend, and savour the amazing things you are about to uncover."

Anyway enough of that. Seriously, this is my official blog for my masters. I’m going to use this blog to chart my progress over the coming year. Ill also use it as a staging area to display ideas and concepts as well as accumulate feedback, giving you the reader a chance to participate with me in the design process.
