Projects on the drawing board

To date, I have two main ideas for projects. Both ideas have two main subject areas in common:

Both explore how the internet experience, which at present only exists virtually, can be adapted in the physical world. Essentially creating a physical web based experience.

Secondly, both have strong technology undertones in that I will be looking at emerging and future technologies to implement the above. I’ve always been interested in what the future has in store. In particular how technology will continue to evolve and change our lives in ever increasing diversity. So as part of what ever project I choose, I’m going to investigate in detail current and emerging technologies. This research will look at technologies out now, a year from now, 5, 10, 15, & 50 years from now and I will base my project around these discoveries / predictions. Essentially I’m going to become a futurist for a year!

Project Idea (1)

Title:

THE VIRTUAL ANNOTATION OF PEOPLE & PLACE: - a visual investigation into the future of on & offline spaces & how this ‘located media’ will be intertwined with our physical one.

About: The idea for the project derived from looking at two websites, www.dodgeball.com & www.socialite.com. Both are mobile phone / web based services that essentially provide us with data relevant in our own personal space at the time.

Dodgeball is a service that you can use to pull friends & people to where you are via your mobile. Basically it tells people where you are and tells them how to get their.

Socialite provides a service that you can use to annotate physical spaces online once again via your mobile phone. Basically you can leave a virtual message on say a street corner, then a few hours or days later, when one of your friends comes to the same street corner, their mobile will tell them that you left a message for them. Essentially it’s the virtual annotation of space.

I liked the idea of both of these as they have the potential to change a person’s interaction with their surroundings and shift their reality of what’s online and what’s offline.

Project Idea (2)

Title:

RE-BRANDING THE SHOPPING EXPERIENCE:- a visual investigation into how retailers will interact with consumers in the future.

About: Shopping has become much more than the exchange of money for goods or services. It has become a form of self expression, a bonding experience and even a form of therapy in some cases. The future will see new technologies completely change the way we shop and how retailers interact with consumers.

The web has shown how consumers prefer a lot more freedom about how and when they shop and what they want. The prefer the more personal experience of shopping online. E.g. online shops can keep track of your buying or browsing habits and suggest new products.

I liked the idea of empowering the consumer with their own shopping experience by providing them with all the information and capability at present only the web provides.
